Doireann Ní Ghríofa’s writing leaps between genres and times, to explore how the past makes itself felt within the present.

A Ghost in the Throat found an 18th century poet haunting a young mother, leading her through visions of blood, milk, lust, and murder. Written on the rooftop of a free carpark in Cork, it went on to be translated into 20 languages, was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and won the James Tait Black Prize.

Doireann is also author of seven books of poetry, each a deepening exploration of birth, death, desire, and domesticity. Her most recent book is Said the Dead, which calls up a chorus of living echoes, becoming both history and ghost story.
