Tenderness of the Tāne

  • Wellington Apothecary 110A Cuba Street Wellington, Wellington, 6011 New Zealand (map)

Tāne Māori are often forced into stereotypes of masculinity—from aggressive sportsmen to strong warriors and stoic labourers. There are many different ways to perform masculinity, however, and this panel of tāne Māori writers will dive into their relationships with normative masculine identities as they relate to alternative ways of being. Hosted by Māori Literature Blog's Jordan, Anthony Lapwood (Home Theatre), Airana Ngarewa (The Bone Tree), and Jackson McCarthy (featured in Spoiled Fruit) discuss how the intersection between masculinity and te ao Māori manifests in their writing.
